Which languages are available in Care to Translate?

Care to Translate is currently available in 130+ languages and we are continuously adding new languages. Please let us know if there are any languages you’d like us to see in the app.

Which countries is Care to Translate available in?

You can download Care to Translate from anywhere in the world. The use of languages in the app does not depend on where you are located. You can translate to and from all languages in the app, regardless of location.

How the app works

Can you speak into the app?

It depends. The phrase library is built on phrases that are already formulated, have been translated into different languages and can be visible in text and played in audio in the app. Live Translate, the real-time AI translation feature, however, allows for speech-to-speech translation. But remember, its output is not pre-validated.

How does the app work?

Healthcare providers can communicate using either verified phrases or real-time AI. Using the phrase library, you simply click a phrase to have it spoken and displayed to the care recipient, who can respond via buttons or gestures. For freer dialogue, Live Translate converts speech to text and audio in real-time. To ensure safety, Live Translate features reverse translation to check accuracy and verified translation match to identify already validated phrases. All activity across the entire app is saved in your translation history (if you have that feature toggled) for easy review.

How does the app work for me as care recipient?

By switching to care recipient mode, you can actively participate in your care. You can use verified phrases to describe symptoms and personal needs, provide information (for example about medications), or ask questions. For freer dialogue, Live Translate allows you to speak naturally in your own language while the healthcare professional responds via speech or text.

Does the app translate in real time?

Yes, the app includes an optional real-time translation feature, available as an alternative to the phrase library. While the library phrases are manually translated and thoroughly verified for medical, contextual, and cultural accuracy, the real-time translation relies on machine translation and AI, and its output is not pre-validated.

When can I use Care to Translate?

Care to Translate serves as a 24/7 complement to human interpreters, bridging communication gaps whenever a professional translator is unavailable or impractical. It is particularly valuable for immediate needs – such as at reception desks or during critical emergencies in ambulances and ERs – where there is no time to wait. The app also supports standardized and preventative care scenarios, such as radiology scans, mammography screenings, and vaccinations, ensuring safe and clear communication throughout the entire patient journey.

Does the app translate medical documents?

Not currently. Care to Translate is specifically optimized for real-time verbal communication and point-of-care interactions. However, we are continuously expanding our features based on user feedback. For a look at our development roadmap and what’s coming next, please visit our product news page.

Live Translate

Does Live Translate store any patient data?

No, we do not store any data (including audio, text, or translated text used in the feature) on our servers, databases, or logs, and the same is true for the translation services in use. Similarly, the translation services we use do not retain any data after processing. We do not share any translation data with third-party services.

Read more in our Live Translate transparency note that can be downloaded here.

Does Live Translate use AI?

Yes, Live Translate is powered by modern machine translation and speech technology, which uses artificial intelligence (AI).

Read more in our Live Translate transparency note that can be downloaded here.

Is Live Translate automatically available in my account?

Yes. But if you are an organization using Care to Translate you have full control over Live Translate and can enable or disable it at any time. Contact us if you want to enable or disable Live Translate in your organization's account.

How safe is Live Translate?

We prioritize the security and privacy of your data. Robust encryption and security measures protect it from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. Furthermore, Live Translate does not store any personal or patient data and we do not share any translation data with third-party services.

What is Live Translate?

Live Translate is designed to give you more flexibility when communicating with care recipients. With Live Translate, you get real-time AI translation across 130+ languages, enhancing our existing verified phrase library. Learn more about the feature here.

When should I use Live Translate?

There are situations where the pre-defined phrases in our phrase library are too limiting, or where the patient wants to reply to something other than what is available as verified phrases. This is where Live Translate serves the purpose of helping the user stay in the context where the verified phrases are still accessible, but allows free real-time translation of whatever is needed for the current dialogue. Our recommendation is to use the phrase library when you communicate sensitive or complex information. Switch to Live Translate when gathering patient responses or handling unexpected situations beyond predefined phrases.
