What are the costs of not taking action?

In addition to the savings, there are costs related to not taking action to solve language barriers when interpreters are not present. They are related to material, patients and staff work environment.

Material costs

• Expensive machines  left unused due to cancellations (for example in radiology)
• More tests being taken (often to “make sure” that the right diagnosis is given)
• More examinations (for the same reason as above)

Patient costs

• More bookings for emergency interpretation situations 
• Patients hospitalized for a longer time
• Longer patient visits at the ER
• Reports filed by unsatisfied patients  (to the clinic, Patient Advisory Committee, and the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO))
