Press release

Helse Nord becomes the third Norwegian regional health authority to make Care to Translate available across its hospital trusts, following Helse Sør-Øst and Helse Midt-Norge.

Care to Translate is pleased to announce that Helse Nord RHF has joined the Norwegian framework agreement for Care to Translate, following an extensive regional pilot and implementation process.

The agreement enables Care to Translate to be rolled out across Helse Nord’s four hospital trusts: Finnmarkssykehuset, Universitetssykehuset Nord-Norge (UNN), Nordlandssykehuset and Helgelandssykehuset.

With Helse Nord joining the framework agreement, Care to Translate is now available across three of Norway’s four regional health authorities: Helse Sør-Øst, Helse Midt-Norge and Helse Nord.

From regional pilot to regional rollout

Helse Nord began evaluating Care to Translate through a coordinated regional pilot in early 2025. Departments across all four hospital trusts participated, representing a broad range of healthcare settings including emergency departments, ambulance services, radiology, intensive care, outpatient clinics and medical and surgical wards.

Following approval from Helse Nord IKT, the solution was introduced gradually across participating departments.

The regional implementation has included a superuser model, with selected healthcare professionals trained to support colleagues locally and adapt frequently used content to the needs of their departments.

Following the pilot, Helse Nord decided to continue and expand its use of Care to Translate through the existing Norwegian framework agreement.

Supporting communication across Helse Nord

Through the regional agreement, healthcare professionals can use Care to Translate across mobile devices, tablets and the web.

The platform combines medically verified phrases with Live Translate for real-time speech and text translation, supporting communication across more than 130 languages.

Departments can also adapt frequently used content and workflows to their clinical setting, while regional and local administrators can manage access and follow usage through the Care to Translate administration portal.

Care to Translate is designed to complement qualified interpreters by supporting shorter conversations, everyday communication and situations where immediate language support is needed.

Maja Magnusson, CEO and co-founder of Care to Translate, comments:

"What makes the Helse Nord implementation particularly exciting is the scale and the way it has grown. It started with healthcare professionals testing the solution in very different clinical environments, from ambulances and emergency departments to radiology and inpatient wards."

Helse Nord is now taking that experience and making the solution available much more broadly across the region.

She continues:

“With Helse Nord joining Helse Sør-Øst and Helse Midt-Norge, Care to Translate is now available to healthcare professionals across three of Norway’s four regional health authorities."

It’s an important milestone for us, but even more importantly, it shows how digital language support can become part of the everyday infrastructure of healthcare.

Tone Kristin Kjær, Spesialrådgiver in Helsefagavdelingen at Helse Nord RHF, adds:

“During the regional pilot, we have been able to evaluate Care to Translate across several different clinical settings and health trusts."

The next step is to make the solution more broadly available and continue supporting departments in integrating it into their everyday work.

Looking ahead

Implementation will continue across the four hospital trusts, supported by local superusers, clinical ICT teams and regional coordination.

Early adoption already shows how implementation models can differ between organisations. Nordlandssykehuset, for example, has enabled access through mobile device management (MDM) to make the solution easier for staff to reach, while additional departments at Universitetssykehuset Nord-Norge have progressively been activated.

The experience from the pilot and rollout will continue to inform how Care to Translate is introduced and used across the region.
