Press release

Care to Translate is proud to announce a new global partnership with World Athletics to strengthen multilingual medical communication at major international sporting events.

The collaboration will help improve athlete health and safety by enabling clear, accurate, and timely communication between international athletes and local medical teams.

The partnership builds on the success of a pilot at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, where Care to Translate’s app was used by medical staff to overcome language barriers and ensure effective treatment for athletes.

Pilot success at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25

During WCH Tokyo 25, Care to Translate’s validated medical translation software played an important role in supporting medical staff in delivering safe and effective care. The app proved valuable in overcoming language barriers, especially given the limited English proficiency of many participating athletes. By facilitating clear communication, it ensured that athletes from around the world received timely and accurate treatment.

“The application was used by the medical staff and was perceived as useful, especially considering that English is not the first language of most of the athletes ” said Dr. Paolo Emilio Adami, Head of Medical Operations at World Athletics.

“We will continue using the software whenever language barriers could otherwise pose an obstacle to providing timely and safe treatment for athletes at large international championships.”

Multilingual medical communication in sports

Care to Translate provides real-time translations in more than 130 languages with a focus on offering voice-to-voice translation for clinical settings. Already trusted by over 700 healthcare organisations worldwide, the tool reduces risks caused by miscommunication, improves patient safety, and increases efficiency in medical encounters.

By integrating this technology into global athletics championships, World Athletics demonstrates its commitment to protecting athletes’ health while ensuring equality of care regardless of language or nationality.

“We are proud to partner with World Athletics and to contribute to safer medical encounters for athletes across the globe,” said Maja Magnusson, CEO of Care to Translate.

“This partnership reflects our shared mission to improve health outcomes by breaking down language barriers, whether in hospitals, care services, or international sporting events.”

Future of the partnership

The partnership will be rolled out at future World Athletics Series events on a case-by-case basis, tailored to each host country’s medical staff language skills and the linguistic needs of international athletes.
