SÖS Bröstcentrum, the breast center and mammography clinic at Södersjukhuset (SÖS) in Stockholm, has signed a licence agreement with Care to Translate to support clear and accessible communication in situations where language barriers may arise.
SÖS Bröstcentrum is responsible for breast cancer screening, diagnostics, and clinical breast examinations for women in Region Stockholm and operates within the national mammography screening programme. As one of Europe’s highest-volume mammography clinics, the center meets a large number of women every year for preventive screening and follow-up care, where clear communication is essential for patient safety, understanding, and trust.
The team at SÖS Bröstcentrum works in a highly diverse care context and brings strong cultural and language awareness into daily clinical practice. To support staff in situations where patients and healthcare professionals do not share a common language, the Care to Translate platform has been made available to staff members across the clinic.
“Language barriers can arise anywhere in care, at any time,” says Pia Bernthling, Head of Department, Breast Centre Mammography Services.
“By making the Care to Translate platform available to all staff members, we ensure that everyone has support to handle these situations in a structured and high-quality way. It helps us communicate clearly with patients despite language differences and contributes to more efficient use of our resources.”
Care to Translate provides healthcare professionals with access to validated medical phrases and voice-to-voice translation, supporting communication directly in the care encounter when other language support is not immediately available.
One of the people responsible for monitoring the use of the platform at SÖS Bröstcentrum is Rose-Marie Lindqvist Wijkander, Unit Manager, Diagnostic Imaging Services (Mammography), Södersjukhuset, who has previous experience using Care to Translate from her work at Karolinska University Hospital.
“I have used Care to Translate for several years in my previous role, so I was already familiar with the platform,” says Rose-Marie Lindqvist Wijkander.
“It is easy to use, and the ability to save frequently used phrases in personal lists makes conversations easier to facilitate in everyday clinical work.”
From Care to Translate’s perspective, the licence agreement highlights the importance of structured language support in women’s health care.
